Contempora Diatonic Baritones
Hugh E. McMillen (University of Colorado,
Director): "The trigger mechanism for the ["Diatonic"
Model Contempora Baritone] was developed to enable
players to bring out-of-tune notes into good tune
without favoring the notes with the lip and
throat. The trigger enables the player to increase
or decrease the length of tubing to alter the
pitch. He can, therefore, "blow through the center
of the tone" and consequently can play an
even-balanced scale in good tune." [1953]
The Contempora baritones were introduced in 1949 and replaced the F.A.
Reynolds models in the catalog; the instruments were the
same, simply rebranded under new Roth ownership. In the 1960s, the Contempora baritones were produced at the
Abilene plant and were similar if not
identical to the Olds Studio baritone models.
