Onyx

The Onyx model was produced at the Olds plant in the mid-1970s. Based on model numbers and documented serial numbers, it appears that the Onyx line may have been introduced as a replacement for the Argenta model line of trumpet, cornet and trombone. The Onyx is not listed in the 1973 price list (the Argenta is) or the 1977 catalog, and known serial numbers date from 1974-1976.

The Onyx model line featured an ebony lacquer [aka "black nickel"] finish option over the brass areas of the horn. The ebony contrasted with the nickel silver used on the tuning slides and valve tops/caps. However, the number of existing horns with what appears to be a regular brass finish instead of ebony suggests that either the finish was not durable and easily wore off or it was not applied at some times in the models' production.
